[ads1][dropcap]A[/dropcap]ccording to data gathered by the ASPCA, about 35% of all American households own a cat.
Whether you currently own a cat and are looking to get another furry friend, or if you’re just considering getting your first cat, there are lots of reasons why they make great pets.
They’re awesome companions, incredibly smart (in fact, a cat’s brain is about 90% similar to our own) and lots of fun.
Maybe you’ve heard that these days, large cat breeds are all the rage.
We’re not talking about wild cats like Cheetahs and Leopards – instead, we’re talking about the large cat breeds you can have right in your home.
Here, check out our list of the top 10 best and most beautiful large cat breeds.
1. The Norwegian Forest Cat
Number one on our list of popular large cat breeds?
Norwegian Forest Cats have a seriously strong history! Many believe that they were used by Viking warriors to get rid of mice on their sailing ships. So, if you have a mouse problem, this is definitely the cat for you.
They’ve even made their way into Norwegian folktales, because of their myth-like climbing abilities.
They can weigh between 13-22 pounds and are known for their highly thick fur that helps to flick water off their bodies. The breed also has tufted toes, because they had to survive harsh winters in Norway.
However, because of their large bodies, these large cat breeds can sometimes have health issues, especially with their hips. If you want to adopt this cat, make sure you have the resources to properly care for it.
2. The Chartreux Cat
Next up on our list of gorgeous large cat breeds is the adorable Chartreux kitty, which can weigh up to 16 pounds.
This cat has received the high honor of being known as France’s national cat! In general, it’s thought that the Chartreux cat is descended from wild mountain cats in the Middle East.
During the Crusades, these cats made their way to France, where they were bred by monks in the South of France!
These cats are quiet in nature but are known for their vibrant personalities (that’s why some people call them the “mime cats.”)
This cat enjoys being around people but is happiest when playing with toys. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see this cat attempting some of its famous acrobatic moves!
3. Maine Coon
People sometimes mix up Maine Coons with Norwegian Forest Cats because they look a bit similar.
The Maine Coon cat, while still a member of the large cat breeds, is slightly smaller, weighing “only” up to about 18 pounds.
Some of these animals even have an extra toe! Their gorgeous coat has similar colors to a raccoon, and they’re highly friendly animals. Especially if you already have other pets, this is a perfect addition to your family.
Also, they’re incredibly active. Some people even enjoy walking their Maine Coons on a leash!
4. Ragamuffin Cats
Next on our list of large cat breeds is the Ragamuffin Cat, which can weigh about 20 pounds and has a longer lifespan than most cats.
This breed is also among the friendliest and most social on our list, so it’s perfect for people who love to snuggle with their animals.
Many believe that this breed is a cross between a Turkish Angora and a Persian cat.
Because this is a longhaired cat, some extra grooming steps will likely be required.
Always take the time at least once a week to give this cat’s beautiful fur a nice comb-through. Luckily, even though the Ragamuffin has a lot of hair, he doesn’t shed too much.
Also, be sure that you trim his nails often, as well as clean out his ears frequently (ask your vet about the best cleaning solution for your individual cat.)
Finally, because Ragamuffins can sometimes have problems with their teeth, try to brush them as often as your furry friend will allow you to.
5. The Ragdoll Cat
Ragdoll cats are probably best known for their bright, blue eyes. In fact, this breed is one of the most popular ones in the United States.
Interestingly, unlike some of the other large cat breeds on our list, the Ragdoll is a pretty new breed, created only in the 1960s.
Many think that they come from Siamese, Birman, or Persian origins.
This breed usually weighs about 80 pounds, but they are amazingly docile and sweet. They don’t mind being picked up, so if you have younger children that are especially “hands-on,” this will likely be a good choice for you.
They love relaxing on the floor with some catnip.
6. The Siberian Cat
This cat from – you guessed it – Siberia and the Russian regions can weigh up to 25 pounds!
They also have a fairly long life expectancy, so your Siberian cat will be with you for a long time. They are especially known for their large, round eyes and pointed ears.
One of the most fun things about this breed?
It’s been known to play fetch, and to exhibit other behaviors you’d expect from a dog more than a cat! Like others on our list, they also love the water.
7. The Turkish Van Cat
This is one of the oldest cat breeds out there. In fact, legend has it that this breed’s ancestors were actually on board Noah’s Ark!
After the flood, of course, the cat migrated to Turkey, where it soon became popular all across Eastern and Central Europe.
Many of them have bright blue eyes, and sometimes as they age, their eyes can actually change color. They may even develop two different eye colors!
Usually, they weigh up to 20 pounds and can be very playful. They especially enjoy jumping, so you may want to invest in a cat jungle gym or another toy if you go with this breed.
Finally, like many large cat breeds, the Turkish van also isn’t at all shy around water. Expect them to love the shower, and even your outdoor sprinkler systems!
8. The Ocicat
This breed of cat is probably the most similar to the Bengal cat, in that it also really looks like it belongs in the wild! They’re great cats for those with a glamorous side.
However, in reality, these cats really enjoy being around people and can be quite social. Their bodies are very long and slim, but don’t let that fool you! Usually, the can weigh between 12-15 pounds.
The can also live between 15-18 years, meaning your Ocicat will really become a part of the family!
In spite of their wild looks, in reality, the Ocicat is a cross between a Siamese cat and an Abyssinian cat.
This breed also comes in a wide range of colors, including cinnamon and even an ivory-like shade.
These cats are natural leaders, which means if you have some cats that are on the shy side in your home already, this breed may be the perfect companion. They’ll certainly love you – and even follow you wherever you go!
A favorite fact about this breed?
Some people have even been able to teach their cats to follow commands like sit and stay, just like they would a dog!
They’ll easily learn to recognize their names, which means it can be hard to talk about them behind their backs.
9. The Savannah Cat
Last on our list of large cat breeds is the Savannah cat. This cat has some African ancestry, and it’s one of the biggest on our list.
In fact, these cats can weigh up to 40 pounds!
They have especially pointy ears, beautiful brown, and black coloring, and are highly energetic. They’re also very vocal, so if there’s something they want, they’ll let you know!
10. The Bengal Cat
The Bengal cat is a medium sized breed but because they have thick boning and muscular bodies, they can sometimes appear bigger than they are in terms of body mass.
There’s so much to love about these awesome kitties, starting with their gorgeous coats. The special sheen is probably thanks to their DNA. In fact, Bengals are part Asian leopard!
This means that, while they move elegantly like wild cats, they’re still easy to cuddle and domesticate.
Another important thing to know about Bengal cats is how much they love to drink – and play around in – the water! Don’t be surprised if your Bengal jumps on your countertops every time you turn on your faucet or even tries to get in the bathtub!
Also, Bengals are very active cats – breaking the stereotype of the cats that sleep about 15 hours out of every day! Because these cats are super-smart, they’ll always be on the lookout for ways to entertain themselves.
